Q&A: MBA Tourism from Pondicherry University? CAT / without CAT or Both?

A reader asked; I am 2nd Year BBA Student want to do MBA Tourism from Pondicherry University. Should I go for CAT (Common Admission Test)? Please suggest.

I feel this is the question of many graduating students especially who wish to earn an MBA degree or similar qualification.

CAT i.e. Common Admission Test is administered by Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) for admission into Post Graduate Management Programs into IIMs and other institutes accepting CAT Score for Admission. There are circumstances when an institute accept CAT score but also conducts entrance test for candidates who does not possess a CAT Score Card.

In the case of Pondicherry University, MBA Tourism is offered through Department of Tourism Studies. The University offers Online Admission Test for Admission into MBA Tourism as well five more MBA Programs i.e. Banking Technology, Business Administration, Insurance Management (Karaikal Campus) and International Business.

Total No of Seats in MBA Tourism are 72 of these 25% seats are reserved for candidates belonging to the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The Puducherry University MBA Entrance Exam Pattern is similar as the test pattern for CAT. You need to secure at least 50% marks in qualifying level i.e. degree level examination to apply for MBA Tourism.

Now coming to your main point, whether you should apply for CAT or no when your first priority is MBA Tourism from Pondicherry?

Since PU MBA Entrance Exam Pattern is similar to that of CAT, you need to prepare in similar lines for both the examination. Also the exam timing for both the exams is different. CAT is held well before December every year, While PU MBA Entrance Exam is held in summers. CAT is comparatively considered tougher than any other test for MBA.

Preparing for CAT and appearing in actual examination will give you an edge in Pondicherry University MBA Entrance Examination. Also, since exam pattern is similar you don’t need to prepare differently for the two. Appearing in CAT will give you added advantage given you qualify in the same to apply for MBA Admission in institutes across India.

Though you are keen to pursue an MBA Tourism from Pondicherry University but appearing in CAT will open more opportunities for you.

So in my view appear for both the tests and unlock more doors of opportunities instead of just holding on one.
