Selection Process : The selection procedure for admission consists of two steps :

Written Test

Group Discussion and Personal Interview

Eligibility: MD / MS / Diplomas:

(b) Applicants for admission for full-time studies who do not possess a M.Tech./ M.Arch./ MURP degree or equivalent in the relevant field must have a valid GATE score (at least 75 percentile) for Engineering/Technology /Science disciplines or must have qualified national level fellowship examinations such as NET (JRF/LS) conducted by UGC/CSIR for Science/ Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines. However Engineering/ Architecture graduates without GATE from IIT/University of Roorkee having CGPA Score > 8.00 or marks > 80%.

The Union Public Service Commission will hold the Combined Defence Services Examination (I), 2010 on 14th February, 2010 for admission to Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy for the Courses commencing in January, 2011 and Officers Training Academy, Chennai for the Courses (Men and Women) commencing in April, 2011 .

Salient features of the examination are published herein for general information of candidates. For details regarding the Eligibility Conditions, Syllabus and Scheme of the examination, Centers of examination, Guidelines for filling up application form etc. aspirants must consult the Detailed Notice of the examination published in the Employment News/ Rozgar Samachar dated 26th September, 2009.

Conditions of Eligibility

(A) Age Limits, Sex and Marital Status:

(i) For Indian Military Academy: Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1987 and not later than 1st January, 1992 only are eligible.

(ii) For Naval Academy: Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1989 (2nd January, 1987 in case of NCC Naval Wing ‘C’ Certificate holders) and not later than 1st January 1992 only are eligible.

(iii) For Air Force Academy: Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1988 and not later than 1st January, 1992 only are eligible.

(iv) For Officers’ Training Academy - (SSC Course for Men) : Male candidates (married or unmarried) born not earlier than 2nd January, 1986 and not later than 1st January, 1992 only are
eligible.

(v) For Officers’ Training Academy - SSC (Women Non-Technical Course): Unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remained and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible. They should have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1986 and not later than 1st January, 1992.

(B) Educational Qualifications :

(i) For Indian Military Academy and Officers’ Training Academy:• Degree of a recognized University or equivalent.

(ii) For Naval Academy:• B.Sc. (with Physics & Mathematics) or Bachelor of Engineering.

(ii) For Air Force Academy:• Degree of a recognised University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

Candidates who are studying in final year Degree Course and have yet to pass final year degree examination or equivalent examination can also apply for the Examination, but they will be required to submit proof of passing the Degree Examination or equivalent examination
by the specified dates published in Commission’s Notice for the Examination.

(C) Physical Standards:

Candidates must be physically fit according to the physical standards for admission to Combined Defence Services Examination (I), 2010 as given in Appendix-V of Commission’s Notice for the Examination published in Employment News/ Rozgar Samachar dated 26th September, 2009.

APPLICATION FORM:

Candidates must apply in the Common Application Form devised by the Commission for its examinations, which can be purchased from the designated Head Post Offices / Post Offices (specified in Appendix-lll of the Notice) throughout the country against cash payment of Rs.20/- (Rupees twenty only). Each such Form can be used only once and only for one examination.

In case of any difficulty in obtaining Application Forms from the designated HPOs/ POs, the candidates should immediately contact the concerned Post Master or UPSC’s "FORMS SUPPLY MONITORING CELL" over Telephone No.011-23389366/Fax No.011-23387310.

For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/ Medical Sciences/ Veterinary Sciences/ Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

iv) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for admission in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other levels.



v) A candidate with MSc in a relevant area is also considered for admission to the Department of Biotechnology. The Candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level.

vi) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

PhD in Design

For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Candidates having MArch/MDes degree or MTech/ ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Master’s degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics / Fine Arts/ Psychology/ Physiology with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

iii) Bachelor’s degree in Design or Engineering/ Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iv) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

v) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor’s level.

vi) BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after 10th standard) with one year professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

vii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his/her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his/her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

PhD in Science


For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

The Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of

three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent. The basis of

computing the percentage obtained by the candidate in the bachelor's degree would be based on the

practice followed by the university/ institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case

of the candidates being awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the equivalence would be based on the

equivalence certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained bachelor's degree.

In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks,

the equivalence would be established by MDI by dividing obtained CGPA with the maximum possible

CGPA and multiplying the resultant with 100.

Candidates appearing for the final examination for the Bachelor's degree (or equivalent examination) and

completing all requirements for obtaining the Bachelor’s degree by 30th June, 2010 can also apply, subject

to furnishing evidence to that effect latest by 1st October, 2010; otherwise they may be asked to withdraw

from the programme.

For Executive Programme:
Minimum of 3 years Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline recognized by the Association of

Indian Universities / AICTE and minimum 5 years of post qualification executive (Class I or Officer Grade)

work experience.
