National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NIT-K)

Admission to M.Tech (Sponsored seats/Research), Ph.D. and M.Sc Programme 2010-2011

Eligibility Criteria

M.Tech (Sponsored seats/Research) Programme:

A pass in the prescribed qualifying examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.0 OR not less than 60% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/ university examination conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme) For SC/ST minimum CGPA of 5.5 OR 55% marks in the aggregate. Valid GATE score is essential for scholarship seats. The number of seats are flexible subjected to the availability of funding for research.

M. Sc in Chemistry: A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with 60% (or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of atleast 6.0 in the 0-10 scale grading system) of the aggregate in all the years of course of study and with 55% (CGPA of atleast 5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system) in respect of SC/ST candidates.

M. Sc. in Physics: A Bachelor’s Degree in the subject with 60% (or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.0 in the 0-10 scale grading system) of the aggregate in all the years of course of study and with 55% (CGPA of at least 5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system) in respect of SC/ST candidates.

For Ph.D. Programme:

i) Admission to a Ph.D. Programme shall be open to candidates who have passed the prescribed qualifying examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system, or not less than 55% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/university examinations conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme). However, this prescribed minimum shall be a CGPA of 5.0 or 50% marks in the aggregate for SC/ST candidates. The prescribed qualifying examination is as follows:

a. For Ph.D. in Engineering/Technology – Master’s degree in relevant field.
b. For Ph.D. in Science /Humanities, Social Sciences & Management – Master’s degree in relevant field.

ii) Employed professionals having experience and proven competence aspiring for Ph.D. Programme will be considered under part-time scheme (External Registration) and will be allowed to pursue their research at their own location of work.

There are five types of student status for Ph.D. programme:
1) Full-time students on Institute Scholarship
2) Full-time sponsored students on QIP/EFIP (AICTE)
3) Full-time/External Registrants sponsored from Industry or other organizations including Educational Institutions
4) Full-time/ External Registrants non sponsored non-scholarship students
5) Internal Registrants sponsored staff of NITK

Application Procedure:

The prescribed application form and Information Bulletin for M.Tech./MTech (Research)/MSc and PhD can be downloaded from the Institute website www.nitk.ac.in .

The application form can be duly filled and sent to the Dy. Registrar (Academic), National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, Srinivasnagar, Mangalore -575 025, Karnataka State on or before the last date prescribed 04.06.2010 along with the D.D. of Rs. 500/- (for SC/ST- Rs.150/-). drawn in favour of the Director, N.I.T.K., Surathkal payable at State Bank of India, or Canara Bank, NITK, campus branch, Surathkal.

Candidates sponsored by the Educational Institutions/Industries must get their applications forwarded through proper channel.

Note: If a candidate desires to apply to more than one course, he/she should submit separate application along with D.D. for each course i.e M.Tech / M.Tech (Sponsored seats/Research)/ PhD programme. Candidates called for interview will have to appear for interview at their own cost. The interview will be held at N.I.T.K., Surathkal.

The Indian Navy

Applications are invited from unmarried Male Indian citizens for Permanent Commission Officers in the Law Cadre of Executive Branch of the Indian Navy for Course commencing Jan 2011 at Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimaia, Kerala.

Eligibility Criteria

Age: 22 to 27 years (candidate must have been born between 02 Jan 1984 to 01 Jan 1989 both dates inclusive).

Educational Qualification:

A Degree in Law qualifying for enrolment as an advocate under Advocates Act 1961, with minimum 55% marks.

Note: Candidates who have not completed their Law Degree (i.e. appearing candidates) need not apply, their applications will not be, accepted.

Physical Standard

Height & weight: (a) Minimum height Male-157 cms with correlated weight

(b) Eye Sight: The minimum acceptable standard for distant vision 6/60, 6/60 correctable to 6/6, 6/12 with glasses. Should not be colour/night blind.

Application Procedure:

If you meet the above requirements, apply on plain A4 size paper (typed or handwritten) in the prescribed Application Format. The envelop containing the from should be super scribe with "LAW CADRE • Jan 2011 COURSE, Educational Qualification ......... Aggregate Percentage .......... %" and should be sent by June 10th, 2010

Selection Procedure

The candidates will be issued call up for Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews based on their performance in Law Degree. If a candidate possesses higher qualification with better percentage, his higher qualification will be considered for cutoff. Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy) [IHQ-MoD(Navy)] reserves the right to shortlist applications and to fix cut off percentage. No communication will be entertained on this account.

SSB interviews for short listed candidates will be scheduled during Aug to Nov 2010 at Bangalore/Bhopal or Coimbatore.

The total duration of SSB interviews is of 5 days, consisting of Stage 1 (Day One) and Stage 2 (Four days). Stage 1 Tests consist of Officers intelligence Rating Tests (OIRT) and Picture Perception and Discussion Tests (PDPT). Candidates who fail to qualify in Stage 1 will be routed back on the same day from SSB centre.

Stage 2 Tests consist of Psychological Tests, Group Task Tests, Group Discussion and interview. Successful candidates will thereafter undergo Special Medical Examination at the same venue (approx duration 5 days at nearest military hospital).

Candidates recommended by the SSBs and declared medically fit, will be appointed for training in order of All India Merit depending on the number of vacancies. The confirmation in the service is subject to satisfactory Police Verification Report and Character & Antecedent Certificate.

Change of SSB centre for interview is not permissible under any circumstances.

Any correspondence regarding change of SSB dates be addressed to the President of the SSB on receipt of call up letter.

No compensation will be paid in respect of any injury sustained as a result of tests.

Return 2nd Class Sleeper rail fare is admissible for the SSB interview, if appearing for the first time for the entry.
