Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITKGP)

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITKGP) was the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) established in 1950 in Kharagpur, West Bengal state of India. The IIT Kharagpur is an institute of national importance and autonomous university free to offer its own courses and awards degrees and certificates. The institute offers many numbers of programs in engineering, sciences, and various technologies at undergraduate and postgraduate level and conducts research programs. Programs are also offered in humanities, medicine and law at postgraduate level.

The IIT Kharagpur offers admission into various programs on the basis of score in entrance examinations, like Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and many others. All regular programs offered at IIT Kharagpur are residential in nature; both students and staff members are provided with living facilities. Besides offering regular courses the IIT Kharagpur also offers special programs like continuing education programs, distance learning programs and short-term courses.

The IIT Kharagpur main campus is located at Hijli, Kharagpur, the institute has two-extension campuses located at Calcutta and Bhubneshwar. The IIT Kharagpur has 18 academic departments, and 5 centers of excellence to conduct different undergraduate and postgraduate programs and carry out research work. At present, nearly 2700 students are enrolled in various programs of IIT Kharagpur; 450 faculty members are engaged in providing instruction for various courses.

Sir J.C. Ghosh an eminent scientist was the first director to IIT Kharagpur. At present Professor PARTHA PRATIM CHAKRABARTI is serving as Director, IIT Kharagpur. Dr Chakrabarti received the President of India Gold Medal (1985), the INSA Young Scientist Award (1991), Anil K Bose Award (1995), INAE Young Engineer�s Award (1997) and the Swarnajayanti Fellowship (1997-98), Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2000), INAE Visweswarya Chair Professorship (2007-9) and many other awards. He has been elected a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and the Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore, Indian National Academy of Engineering and the West Bengal Academy of Science & Technology.

The campus of IIT Kharagpur acquires 2200 acres of land consisting various faculty buildings, hostels for men and women, Guest Houses, Museums, Science & Technology Park, faculty residence buildings, staff quarters, bank, post office hospital, gymkhana playground, central library etc. The central library offers one of the best platforms for knowledge exchange where students and faculty members can mingle up and discuss various issues concerning education, science, technology and much more besides surfing through books, journals and periodicals.
