Eligibility: Candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification obtained after a minimum of three year of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.

Candidates appearing for the final bachelor’s degree/ equivalent qualification examination can also apply. Such candidates must produce a certificate from the Principal/Head of the Department/Registrar/Director of the university/ institution certifying that the candidate has obtained 60% marks or equivalent (6.0 in credit and grade system) (55% or equivalent (5.5 in credit and grade system) in case of the candidates belonging to scheduled caste/ Scheduled Tribe or Persons with Disability category) based on latest available grades/ marks. Such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if they submit a certificate latest by 30th June 2008 from the Principal/Registrar of their college/institute (issued on or before 30th June 2008) stating that they have completed all the requirements (the results may, however, be awaited) for obtaining the bachelor’s degree/ equivalent qualification on the date of issue of the certificate. Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the bachelor’s degree/ equivalent qualification refereed to in the certificate issued by Principal/Registrar of their college/institute. The deadline for submission of the marksheet and the certificate is 31st July 2008. Non-fulfillment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE :

For MBA & MCA Programmes selection will be made based on the marks obtained in the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) conducted by the Anna University on behalf of the Government of Tamil Nadu, following the Community-wise reservation as stipulated by the Government.

The candidates from other states except SC/ST candidates, will be considered under General Turn.

Therefore, the candidates (including other State candidates) who aspire for admission in the University of Madras, shall appear for the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) to be conducted on 17.05.2008. The details on the Entrance Examinations has been published in the dailies on 16.03.2008.

Those who are appearing for University Final year Examinations in April/May 2008, may also apply for TANCET 2008 and for admission to the MBA & MCA programmes in the University departments 15% supernumerary seats are available for MBA (Regular) and MCA programme for the Foreign National/ NRI having a foreign passport and valid VISA, without Entrance Examination.

15% supernumerary seats are available for MBA Self-supportive for sponsored candidates. The sponsored candidates also must appear for TANCET. Candidates applying for self-supportive MBA programme should not undertake employment during the course.





DATE OF ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR M.PHIL & P.G. PROGRAMMES:

Those who are appearing for University final year examinations in April/May 2008 may also apply for all the programmes. The Entrance Examination will be held form 2nd June 2008 onwards. The Heads of the Departments concerned will issue Hall-tickets indicating the place, date and time for Entrance Examination. Such of those candidates who have not received Hall-tickets in time due to Postal delay etc. have to contact the Head of the department concerned for getting necessary permission to take Entrance examination.

ISSUE OF APPLICATIONS IN PERSON:

Application and Academic Prospectus can be had in person at the information centre, University of Madras, Chennai - 600005 on payment of Rs. 200/- (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST candidates on production of xerox copy of the community certificate) by cash for all the programmes.

ISSUE OF APPLICATIONS BY POST:

Those who want to obtain application and the Prospectus by Post have to send a written requisition specifying the name of the programme together with a Demand Draft for a sum of Rs. 250/- (Rs. 200/- towards cost of Application and Rs. 50/- towards postage) drawn in favour of "The Registrar, University of Madras Chennai-5" for admission to all the programmes.

Application can also be down loaded from the University website at unom.ac.in However, the cost of application for Rs. 200/- by means of Demand Draft shall be enclosed, failing which the application will be summarily rejected.

b) Candidates for M.Sc. Geo-Informatics must have studied and passed certain required subjects in Class 12 as given below. Candidates must have passed in ALL subjects in which they have appeared in Class 12 (excluding optional subjects) with minimum 60% marks in average (50% for SC/ST). Marks in Class 12 will be computed as average of best 5 subjects in which candidate has appeared, (excluding optional subjects) but including required subjects.

c) Candidates must hold a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification of any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislatures in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India/AIU. This degree must entail a minimum of three years of education (10+2+3 system) after completing higher secondary schooling (Class 12 or equivalent).

d) Candidates of B.Sc. / B.A. / B. Com. Honours must have minimum 60% marks in average (50% for SC/ST) in their Honours subject. Candidates of other graduate courses must have minimum 60% marks in average (50% for SC/ST) in graduation, marks to be computed as average of marks obtained in ALL subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects).

e) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

f) Candidates appearing for final examinations of their bachelor’s programme in 2008 can also apply, and if selected can join the programme provisionally. At the time of the counselling they must bring the following:

i. A certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute stating that by 30 June 2008, they will have appeared for examination in all subjects required for obtaining their bachelor’s degree.

ii. A certificate from the Principal certifying that they have obtained 60% marks or equivalent (50% in case of SC/ST candidates) based on latest available grades / marks.

Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the bachelor's degree / equivalent qualification with at least 60% marks (50% in case of SC/ ST). They must submit proof of passing their final examinations with requisite marks by 31 October 2008. Non-fulfillment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission.

(B) The M.E. and M. Pharm programmes:

a) Candidates must have passed in ALL subjects in which they have appeared in Class 10 (excluding optional subjects) with minimum 60% marks in average (50% for SC/ST). Marks in Class 10 to be computed as average of marks obtained in ALL subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects).

b) Candidates must have passed in ALL subjects in which they have appeared in Class 12 (excluding optional subjects) with minimum 60% marks in average (50% for SC/ST). Marks in Class 12 will be computed as average of best 5 subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects).

c) For the M.E. programmes, candidates must hold a B.E. / B.Tech / AMIE or equivalent degree in the appropriate disciplines / branches mentioned below for the respective courses. Candidates must be GATE qualified and must have a first class or minimum 60% marks in average (55% for SC/ST) in graduation. In case the examining Board does not award a class, the percentage marks in graduation will be computed as average of marks obtained in all subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects). Non-GATE candidates may also apply

d) For the M. Pharm programme, candidates must hold a B. Pharm degree from a PCI and AICTE approved Institute. Candidates must be GATE qualified and must have a first class or minimum 60% marks in average (55% for SC/ST) in graduation. In case the examining Board does not award a class, the percentage marks in graduation will be computed as average of marks obtained in all subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects). Non-GATE candidates may also apply

Marks in Class 12 will be computed as average of best 5 subjects in which candidate has appeared, (excluding optional subjects) but including required subjects.





c) For the M. Tech programmes, candidates must be GATE qualified and must hold either a i. B.E. / B.Tech / AMIE/ equivalent degree in the appropriate disciplines / branches mentioned below for the respective courses, with a first class or minimum 60% marks in average (55% for SC/ST) in graduation. In case the examining Board does not award a class, the percentage marks in graduation will be computed as average of marks obtained in all subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects), OR an

ii. MCA or M.Sc. / M.A. degree in the appropriate disciplines / branches mentioned below for the respective courses with first class or 60% (55% for SC/ST), [except for M. Tech in NMPT], after graduating with a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification in 10+2+3 system from a recognized University, with minimum 60% marks in average (50% for SC/ST) [as per clauses (c) and (d) of CMEC-PG1 above] Non-GATE candidates may also apply

d) For the MUP programme, candidates must be GATE qualified and must hold either a

i. B.Arch / B.Planning or equivalent or B.E. in Civil Engineering with a first class or minimum 60% marks in aggregate (55% for SC / ST) [as per clause c (i) above] OR an

ii. M.A. / M.Sc. degree in Geography, Economics, Sociology or Environmental Science with 55% marks (50% for SC/ST) after graduating with a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification in 10+2+3 system from a recognized University, with minimum 60% marks in average (50% for SC/ST) [as per clauses (c) and (d) of CMEC-PG1 above]
Non-GATE candidates may also apply

e) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

f) Candidates appearing for final examinations in 2008 can also apply, and if selected can join the programme provisionally. At the time of the counselling they must bring the following:

i. A certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute stating that by 30 June 2008, they will have appeared for examination in all subjects required for obtaining their qualifying degree.

ii. A certificate from the Principal certifying that they have obtained the requisite marks as above based on latest available grades / marks.


Application procedure: Candidates should obtain our Information Brochure 2008 and Postgraduate Application Material 2008 giving details of the eligibility criteria, number of seats, fee structure, reservations, and containing the prescribed application form.

The same may be obtained in person from the Accounts Office at Mesra or from any of our Extension Centres during working hours on all working days, from 4 April 2008 up to 9 May 2008, on payment by crossed Demand Draft for Rs. 1,000/- in favour of Birla Institute of Technology, payable at Ranchi.

To obtain the Information Brochure 2008 and Postgraduate Application Material 2008 by post, send a crossed demand draft for Rs. 1,100/- in favour of Birla Institute of Technology, payable at Ranchi, along with a covering letter mentioning the course applied for, and two slips of paper (of size 10 x 10 cm) with your name and address clearly written in block capitals, and telephone number, to Dean Admissions at Mesra or Director of any of our Extension Centres. Write PG - 2008 on the envelope. Postal requests must be received by 5 May 2008.

To apply for any of the programmes, eligible candidates must send the completed application with enclosures to office of the Dean Admissions, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi – 835215, positively by 15 May 2008.

You may use one application form to apply for only one programme – M.E. or M. Pharm or M. Tech or MUP or M.Sc. and only one discipline within that programme – for example only M.E. in Electrical or M. Tech in Computer Science or M.Sc. in Bioinformatics. However, one application form can be used to apply for various specializations within some M.E. programmes and within the M. Pharm programme. In the case of M.Sc. programmes in Bioinformatics and Geoinformatics.

you may also use one application form to apply for different Places for Study, in order of preference. Please use separate application form(s) to apply for two (or more) programme(s). Applications made on photocopies of forms are not acceptable.
