Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Geologists Examination–2010

The Union Public Service Commission will hold the Geologists’ Examination, 2010 commencing from 04th December, 2010 for recruitment to the posts of Geologist, Group A in the Geological Survey of India and Jr. Hydro geologist (Scientist ‘B’), Group ‘A’ and Asstt. Hydro geologist, Gr. ‘B' in the Central Ground Water Board. The examination will be held at various centres across the country.

Eligibility Criteria

Age Limits: Candidates must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on 1st January, 2010.

The upper age limit is relaxable for Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes / Other Backward Classes / Physically Handicapped and certain other categories of candidates to the extent specified in the Notice

Educational Qualifications: A candidate must hold (i) Master’s Degree in Geology or Applied Geology or Marine Geology: or (ii) Master’s Degree in Mineral Exploration (for posts in Geological Survey of India only), or (iii) Master’s Degree in Hydrogeology (for posts in Central Ground Water Board only) from a recognized University; or (iv)

Diploma of Associateship in Applied Geology of the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

Physical Standards: Candidates must be physically fit according to the Regulations given in Appendix-II of Rules for the Geologist’s Examination, 2010 published in the Gazette of India dated 19th June, 2010.

Application Procedure

(a) Candidates, who wish to apply offline, must apply in the Common Application Form devised by the Commission for its examinations, which can be purchased from the designated Head Post Offices / Post Offices (specified in Appendix-lll of the Notice published in the Employment News dated 19.06.2010) throughout the country against cash payment of Rs.20/- (Rupees Twenty only).

Each such Form can be used only once and only for one examination. In case of any difficulty in obtaining Application Forms from the designated HP’Os / POs, the candidates should immediately contact the concerned Post Master or UPSC’s "FORMS SUPPLY MONITORING CELL" over Telephone No.011- 23389366. Fax No.011-23387310.

(b) Candidates can also apply Online using the link http://www.upsconline.nic.in Detailed instructions for filling up online applications are available on the above mentioned Website.

FEE: (a) Candidates applying Offline (through Common Application Form) are required to pay a fee of Rs.100/- (Rupees One Hundred only) through Central Recruitment Fee Stamp only.

(b) Candidates applying Online are required to pay a reduced fee of Rs.50/- (Rupees Fifty only) either by remitting the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI or by using Visa, ‘Master Credit / Debit Card.

(c) All Female candidates / SC / ST / Physically Handicapped candidates are exempted from payment of Fee. (OBC candidates are required to pay full fee).

However, in respect of candidates residing abroad or in certain remote areas specified in the Notice published in the Employment News dated 19.06.2010, the last date for receipt of applications by Post / Speed Post only (not by Hand or by Courier) is 26th July, 2010.

(b) Online
The Online Applications can be filled upto 12th July, 2010 till 11.59 P.M. after which the link will be disabled.

Courses Offered

Master Degree (M.Sc.) and PG Diploma in the field of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation with specialization in Geo-Informatics and Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Management

Eligibility Criteria

Geo-Informatics: The applicants having with M.Sc./ M.Tech. degree in Physics, Mathematics, Applied mathematics, Statistics, Geology, Geography (with science subjects at graduation level), Geophysics, Meteorology, Oceanography, Agriculture, Urban and Regional Planning, Remote Sensing, Natural Science or equivalent OR

B.E/B.Tech. degree (4 years) in Civil Engineering, Electronics, Agriculture Engineering, B.Sc. Agriculture or Forestry or equivalent

OR MCA with science graduation. The applicants are required to have passed with First Division in any one of the above said degrees. Knowledge of programming skill and mathematic aptitude will be preferred. For working government servants, graduation in science with 2 years of experience is required for PG Diploma course. Applicants should have studied mathematics and basic science up to 10th standard.

Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Management:
M.Sc. in Geography/ Geology/Geophysics/ Oceanography/ Marine Science/ Meteorology/ Natural Sciences/ Earth Sciences/ Agriculture or B.Arch./ B. Planning/ M. Planning or B.E./B.Tech./ M.E./ M.Tech. in Civil Engg. / Agricultural Engineering or B. Sc. Forestry/ Agriculture (both with 4 Years) or Forest Officers (for P.G. Diploma course).

Applicants for both courses must have studied mathematics and basic science up to 10th standard. Candidates applying for M.Sc. course should have secured a minimum of 60% marks in the qualifying examination.
