Political Science as a study discipline

Political Science deals with the theory and practice of politics and the explanation and investigation of political system and political behavior. Political science has many sub fields of study like political theory, political philosophy, political ideology, political economy, policy studies and analysis, comparative politics, international relations, and many other fields.
A person who studies Political Science is called Political Scientist. To analyze the process, systems, and political dynamics of a given segment, viz; region, country, or government political scientist uses scientific and humanistic approaches including different methodological approaches.

The study of political science focuses on fundamental side of human experience and helps individuals for active participation in political community. For a successful career in political science individual must show following qualities- good communication skills both oral and written, power to interact with masses, able to develop new ideas, understanding people’s needs, team spirit, good problem solving skills and analytical skills, leadership qualities, ability to work under pressure, working knowledge of computers and research skills.

A course in political science prepares a student for career in politics; however, student may also apply knowledge and skills gained through political science course in other related areas. 

Political Science has a rich past associated with it. Greek Philosopher Aristotle is believed as first Political Scientist to analyze political information by systematic means. During 4th century BC Aristotle compared the constitution of Greek City States and generalized the political consequences of different constitutions.

The advancements in study of political science took place during 5th and 4th century BC in Greece, in the Roman republic from 509 to 31 BC, in the republic of Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries, in the middle of the political chaos of 17th century Britain, and during the French and American revolutions toward the end of the 18th century. German Political Scientists developed Staatlehre in 19th century to provide useful information on government.

The Prince written by the Italian diplomat Niccolò Machiavelli in 1513 is the most powerful work done till date in political science. In ancient India, the background of political science can be traced back to the Rig-Veda, Samhitas, Brahmanas, and Buddhist Pali Canon. Chanakya (c. 350-275 BC) was a professor of political science at Takshashila University; later he became the Prime Minister of Mauryan Empire Chandragupta Maurya. Chanakya is regarded as Indian Machiavelli. His Book Arthashastra, is one of the earliest treatises on political thought, economics and social order, and can be considered an antecedent to Machiavelli's The Prince.

In academic settings, political science is taught under humanities discipline from class 11th onwards. Universities offer political science at under graduate and post gradate level and awards degrees like Bachelor in Arts, Master in Arts and Doctor of Philosophy etc. Political Science is one the preferred subject among humanities discipline students.
