KBAT 2014 Online Entrance Test

The KBAT 2014 is entrance test for Biotechnology Finishing School (BTFS) Job-Oriented courses with fellowship for Life Science students. Students who cleared KBAT Entrance Test receives fellowship worth Rs. 10000/- per month. The KBAT is unique initiative in India with enhanced placement opportunities in Biotech Sector, launched by Govt. of Karnataka in association with Govt. of India and ABLW. The course covers 8 domains in 12 reputed institutes across Karnataka.

ICAR International Fellowship 2014

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) invites applications from the Indian as well as overseas nationals having Master’s Degree in Agriculture and allied sciences for the ICAR International Fellowships (ICAR-IFs) for the Year 2014-15.


The ICAR-Ifs are available for pursuing doctoral degree in agriculture and allied sciences, in the identified priority areas, to the (i) Indian Candidates for study abroad in the identified overseas Universities / Institutions having strong research and teaching capabilities and (ii) to overseas candidates for study in the best Indian Agricultural Universities (AUs) in the ICAR-AUs system.

Twenty Fellowships, (likely to increase up to 30) each for total duration of 3 years will be available.

Instructions to Candidate for Filling up Online Application Form for Ph.D. Program 

1. Candidate is first required to pay the application fee online (Rs. 1200 for General/OBC and Rs. 600 for SC/ST/PH) and obtain transaction ID receipt indicated on payment response/status page. The link for online payment is provided on the bottom of the left hand side on home page.
2. Candidate is to mention the Transaction ID in the online application form.
3. Fill in your relevant details in appropriate place/box provided in the Application form. Incomplete form is liable for rejection.
4. Candidate must fill correctly all the fields which are mentioned as “mandatory” in the application form. (i.e. it is mandatory to mention roll no/registration no. For examinations such as GATE/CAT etc.)
5. Candidate having any qualification other than the qualifying degrees may fill in the box mentioned as “other”.
6. Candidate is required to upload "Statement of Purpose" in maximum 400 words that may include the domain of research, motivation, possible methodology.
7. Upon submission of the form you will be asked to take print of the application. Take the print of the filled in form and along with photocopies of relevant testimonials (such as Certificates/marksheets/grade card /GATE/CAT/ NET score/mark sheet etc.) send by post to the address given in the advertisement.

SECTION- A
General information on science and its interface with society to test the candidate’s awareness of science,
aptitude of scientific and quantitative reasonsing. Common elementary computer science. History of
development of computers, Mainframe, Mini, Micro’s and Super Computer Systems. General awareness of
computer Hardware i..e. CPU and other peripheral devices ( input / output and auxiliary storage devices ).
Basic knowledge of computer systems, software and programming languages i.e. Machine language, Assembly language and higher level language. General awareness of popular commercial software packages other Scientific application packages.

SECTION – B
1. Basic Mathematical Methods: Calculus, Vector algebra and vector calculus, Linear algebra, matrices,
Linear differential equations, Fourier – series, Elementary complex analysis.
2. Classical Dynamics: Basic principles of classical dynamics. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms.
Symmetries and conservation laws. Motion in the central field of force. Collisions and scattering. Mechanics
of a system of particles. Small oscillations and normal modes. Wave motion – wave equation, phase velocity, group velocity, dispersion. Special theory of relativity – Lorentz transformations, addition of velocities, mass – energy equivalence.
3. Electromagnetics: Electrostatics – Laplace and Poisson equations, boundary value problems.
Magnetostatics – Ampere’s theorem, Biot – Savart Law, electromagnetic induction. Maxwell’s equations in
free space and in linear isotropic media. Boundary conditions on the fields at interfaces. Scalar and vector
potentials. Gauge invariance. Electromagnetic waves – reflection and refraction, dispersion, interference,
coherence, diffraction, polarization. Electrodynamics of a charged particle in electric and magnetic fields.
Radiation from moving charges, radiation from a dipole. Retarded potential.
4. Quantum Physics and Applications: Wave – particle duality. Heisenberg’s uncertainty Principle. The
Schrodinger equation Particle in a box, Harmonic Oscillator, Tunnelling through a barrier. Motion in a central potential, Orbital angular momentum. Angular momentum algebra, spin. Addition of angular momenta. Time
– independent perturbation theory. Fermi’s Golden Rule. Elementary theory of scattering in a central
potential. Phase shifts, partial wave analysis, Born approximation, identical particles, spin – statistics
connection.
5. Thermodynamic and Statistical Physics: Laws of thermodynamics and their consequences, Thermodynamic potentials and Maxwell’s relations. Chemical potential, phase equilibria. Phase space, microstates and macrostates. Partition function. Free Energy and connection with thermodynamic quantities. Classical and quantum statistics, Degenerate electron gas. Blackbody radiation and Planck’s distribution law, Bose-Einstein condensation. Einstein and Debye models for lattice specific heat.
6. Experimental Design: Measurement of fundamental constants : e, h, c,. Measurement of High & Law
Resistances, L and ; Detection of X – rays, Gamma rays, charged particles, neutrons etc : Ionization chamber, proportional counter, GM counter, Scintillation detectors, Solid State detectors. Emission and Absorption Spectroscopy. Measurement of Magnetic field, Hall effect, magnetoresistance. X-ray and neutron Diffraction.
Vacuum Techniques: basic idea of conductance, pumping speed etc. Pumps ; Mechanical Pump, Diffusion
pump ; Gauges; Thermocouple, Panning, Pirani, Hot Cathode. Low Temperature: Cooling a sample over a range upto 4 K and measurement of temperature; Measurement of Energy and Time using electronic signals from the detectors and associated instrumentation : Signal processing, A/D conversion & multichannel analyzers, Time-of-flight technique ; Coincidence Measurements ; true to chance ratio, correlation studies.
7. Electronics: Physics of p n junction. Diode as a circuit element ; clipping, clamping ; Rectification, Zener
regulated power supply ; Transistor as a circuit element : CC, CB and CE configuration. Transistor as a switch, OR, AND, NOT gates. Feed back in Amplifiers. Operational amplifier and its applications : inverting, non – inverting amplifier, adder, integrator, differentiator, wave form generator, comparator & Schmidt trigger.
Digital integrated circuits NAND & NOR gates as building blocks, X OR Gate, simple combinational circuits, Half & Full adder, Flip-flop, shift register, counters.
Basic principles of A/D & D/A converters ; Simple applications of A/D & D/A converters.
8. Atomic & Molecular Physics: Quantum states of an electron in an atom. Hydrogen atom spectrum.
Electron spin. Stern-Geriach experiment. Spin-orbit coupling, fine structure, relativistic correction,
spectroscopic terms and selection rules, hyperline structure. Exchange symmetry of wave functions. Paulâs
exclusion principle, periodic lable alkali type spectra, LS & JJ coupling, Zeeman, Paschen Back and Stain effects.
X-Rays and Auger transitions, Compton effect. Principles of ESR, NMR. Convalent, ionic and Van der Waals interaction.
Rotation Vibration spectra. Raman Spectra, selection rules, nuclear spin and intensity alternation, isotope
effects, electronic states of diatomic molecules, Frank Condon principle. Lasers spontaneous and stimulated
emission, optical pumping, population inversion, coherence (temporal and spatial) simple description of

9. Condensed Matter Physics: Crystal classes and systems, 2d & 3d lattices, Bonding of common crystal
structures, reciprocal lattice, diffraction and structure lector, elementary ideas about point defects and
dislocations. Lattice vibrations, Phonons, specific heat of solids, free electron theory Fermi statistics ; heat
capacity. Electron motion in periodic potential, energy bands in metals, insulators and semi-conductors ; fight binding approximation ; impurity levels in depend semi-conductors. Electronic transport from classical kinetic theory, electrical and thermal conductivity, Hall effect and thermoelectric power transport in semiconductors.

DSE Science Research Council Awards 2014-15

Applications are invited from young scientists and engineers who have proven track record in the respective field, to satiate their innovative ideas and pursue advanced research in an accelerated pace, the “DAE-Science Research Council Outstanding Investigators” (DAE-SR-OI) awards for the year 2014-15.

The award includes a research grant for a period of 5 years which shall be used for the sole purpose of pursuing the research project. Besides research grant, the awardees will be given an incentive of Rs. 25000/- per month for five years in addition to the salary that they draw from their employer. (Conditions apply).

Age Limit: The applicant should be below 47 years as on 31 December 2014.

Ramalingaswami Re-Entry Fellowship

Applications are solicited from Indian Nationals working in overseas research institutions for the “Ramalingaswami Re-Entry Fellowship”, a re-entry scheme of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology; Government of India.

Aim of the Fellowship


The scheme is conceptualized with the aim of attracting highly skilled researchers (Indian Nationals) working overseas in various cutting edge disciplines of Biotechnology (agriculture, health sciences, bio-engineering, energy, environment, bioinformatics and other related areas), by providing them an attractive avenue to pursue their R&D interests in Indian institutions.

Who is eligible to apply?

The applicant should possess a Ph.D, MD, M.Tech, MVSc or equivalent degree with an outstanding track record as reflected in publications and other recognitions and with atleast 3-years of post-doctoral research experience in overseas research laboratories. Candidates (Indian Nationals) working overseas are eligible to apply. Those who have already returned to India within one year of the closing date of this advertisement are also eligible to apply.

Incentives of being a Ramalingaswami Fellow

  1. This is senior fellowship programme and awardees are to be considered synonymous to the faculty / scientists at the level of Scientist-D. They are entitled to take up teaching/research assignments and supervising Doctoral / MS Students.
  2. The scheme provides a consolidated monthly remuneration of Rs. 75000/- per month (Rs. 85000/- per month w.e.f. 1 April 2014). In addition, a House Rent Allowance (HRA) of Rs. 7500/- per month is given to fellows. In case host institute provides accommodation to the fellow, no house rent allowance is admissible.
  3. Fellows will receive a research/contingency grant of Rs. 10 lakhs for the 1st Year, Rs. 7.50 lakhs for the 2nd Year, and Rs. 5 lakh for the subsequent 3 Years for purchase of consumables, minor equipment, international and domestic travel, engaging manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred for the implementation of research proposal.
  4. DBT encourages host institutions to provide medical benefits, transport allowance, leave travel allowance and other benefits as per their prevailing norms as applicable to their employees of the rank equivalent to Scientist-D out of their own resources/funds.
  5. Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellows could take up fellowship at any of the scientific institutes/universities in the country. However, application should be duly forwarded by the competent authority of the host Institute. Fellows / Awardees can change his/her host institute only once during the tenure of the fellowship.
  6. Awardees are eligible to apply for research grants to any of the funding agencies towards accomplishment of research proposal. However, the Co-Pl has to be a permanent employee of the host institution..

Tenure of Fellowship

Fellows can draw fellowship for a term of 5-Years. Fellowship is further extendable for another term on a fresh appraisal of performance of the fellow. Those who are able to secure permanent positions will not be considered for 2nd term.

The Scheme
To attract talent for Doctoral Research, nurture leadership qualities in research scholars, provide them exposure to international best practices, innovative ways of thinking and to boost industrial research by academic institutions, the government and industry have jointly developed a scheme supporting aspiring 100 Ph.D Scholars every year with double scholarship (upto Rs. 600000 per annum) 50% of which will be provided by government and balance 50% by a sponsoring company, for four years. The fellow will receive PhD degree by doing this industrial research.

  • Doctoral Fellow should have registered for full-time Ph.D between 1 December 2012 to 31 December 2013, in any recognized Indian University / Institute / Research Laboratory.
