Admission Procedure For International Students

To apply for admission in a US College or University, I recommend you to fill the application form of 4 to 6 institution considering cost factor etc. However, you can apply for as many institutions as you wish. Normally, all institutes follow similar pattern for application. The material prepared for one institution is reusable for others too though specific requirements may vary. Check properly with your institute website what all it asks for as application material. In general, following are the requirements:

  • Application form
  • Standardized Test Scores
  • Transcripts
  • Personal statement - which is also called the Statement of Purpose essay or SoP
  • Separate research statement if you are applying for research programme (sometimes required– describing your research interests and plans)
  • 2-3 Recommendation Letters
  • CV (sometimes required) listing your professional and extracurricular accomplishments
  • Students applying for a program like MBA may require appearing for an Interview while an audition may be a requirement for students applying for programmes like arts
  • Arts students also require submitting a portfolio.
  • Application fee of approximately $50-100 per application (check with your institution for exact figures)

Candidates are advised to initiate pre application process some 14-18 months in advance before the time for intake. If you are planning to take admission during Fall Semester write standardized tests in October / November. However, if you are planning for Spring Intake, write standardized test before June. The score of standardized test is valid for years, but fresh score is recommended to win on the admission queue.
