Common Admission Test (CAT) 2021

CAT is aptitude test held for graduate students interested to take management programme for post graduate studies. Anyone with any study stream at graduate level can write CAT. However, selection criteria are truly different. You CAT Score is a determinant of what you have studied till graduate level and whether you will be able to post graduate management programme successfully. What is CAT?

CAT stands for Common Admission Test for Admission into Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) for Post Graduate Programme/Courses in Management. CAT Score is also accepted by many other Non-IIM Management Institutes.

Who conducts CAT? 

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) administers CAT. Every year, one of the IIM has given the responsibility for administration of CAT.

Does passing in CAT guarantee admission into one of the IIMs?

No, the passing in CAT is mandatory for writing applications for IIMs. However, each IIM conducts Group Discussion (GD) and  Personal Interview (PI) for selection. Besides, candidates may also require fulfilling certain other criteria. For details read How IIMs shortlist candidates for admission into Post Graduate Programmes.

Who can appear for CAT?

Anyone who has a Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks can apply for CAT. 5% relaxation in marks is available to candidates belonging to reserved categories.

What are reserved categories? Is there any seat reservation available?

The list of reserved categories are Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disability (PWD)/Differently Abled (DA) category). Seat reservation is available in both IIMs and Non-IIM CAT member institutes as per government’s norms.

Where can I submit CAT 2021 Application Form?

You need to apply online for CAT 2021. Hard Copy application forms are not accepted towards CAT 2021. Apply online for CAT 2021 before last date; go to CAT Registration Website

How many times I can write CAT in a year?

You can appear for CAT only once in a year. Most importantly CAT is scheduled only once every year in November.

For how long CAT Score Card is valid for applying for management admission?

CAT Score Card is valid only for one year.

What type of questions is asked in CAT?

CAT is distributed over three sections as mentioned below:
Section I: Quantitative Ability, Section II: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning and Section III: Verbal Ability

CAT is Computer Based Test (CBT). Instead of answering as paper based question paper, you will require appear in front of a computer. The machine will display questions on screen, and you will require clicking on correct answer using mouse.

I never used a computer yet. I am worried, if I will be able to appear for CAT

Appearing for CAT does not require any computer operating skill. However, CAT will website will present you online demo CAT for preparation. Must take this demo to get comfortable with a Computer Based Test (CBT). The Demo Link shall be functional from Mid October.

Do I need to attend a coaching class?

That’s completely depends on your choice and level of education you have received till date. CAT is competitive examination. Good Score is essential to secure admission in an IIM or a member institute. A Coaching Class or Subject Matter Expert may prove helpful in preparation.

Is there any negative marking in CAT?

• For questions other than Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), 3 marks are assigned for ‘correct answer’ and no marks for ‘wrong or no attempt’.
• The scoring scheme for multiple-choice questions is as follows:
• Each correct answer is awarded 3 marks.
• An incorrect answer fetches -1.
• No marks are given or deducted for un-attempted questions.
