Sociology as a study discipline

Sociology is the study and categorization of human societies. In Sociology we learn about the social life, social changes, social roots and consequences of human behavior. People who study sociology are called sociologist. They reasoned about the make up of human groups, organizations and societies and the way people communicate in these circumstances. As we know social aspects make human behavior, the study of sociology varies from the close family to the huge masses, from planned crime to spiritual sects, from the distributions of race, gender and social groups to the shared faith of ordinary civilization, and from sociology of work to the sociology of sports.
Sociology offers major scope for research, theory, and knowledge application.  As a study discipline it offers lots of characteristic viewpoints on the world, giving out new ideas and criticizing the old. Research techniques offered through sociology can be applied to almost any facet of social life: street crime and criminal behavior, corporate downsizing, how people articulate emotions, welfare or education restructuring, how families vary and thrive, or problems of peace and war.

Since the sociology deals with the majority of challenging issues of our time, it is a fast growing field whose potential is more and more tapped by those who build policies and create programs. Sociology facilitates us in understanding of the organization and dynamics of society, and their complicated relations to patterns of human behavior and individual life changes. The sociology scholars know social disparity, patterns of deeds, forces for social amend and confrontation, and the way social systems works.

Like many other fields of study sociology also have various fields. Following are given some fields of sociology.

Applied sociology- sometimes also called clinical sociology is the technique of using sociological knowledge in applied or clinical settings. It is completely different from academic sociology in which scholars work in educational settings like university and research centers etc.

Sociology of Architecture- Under this branch we study the sociology of architecture profession and the built in environment.

Sociology of Arts- This branch of sociology teaches us about social world of arts and aesthetics.

Sociology of Childhood – Childhood is the central object of all societies in the world. In this branch of sociology we study the social methods in which childhood is carried out in different societies to make children responsible citizens of tomorrow.

Collective Behavior- In this branch of sociology we study about social progresses, which emerge instantaneously but not existing since always. Sociologist Robert E. Park first used the terminology Collective Behavior.

Computational Sociology – As name suggests this is freshly introduced branch of sociology in which we take in use computation to define social behavior.

Criminology- In this branch of sociology we study reasons of crime in societies so as to prevent them from happening in future. This is one of the most important branches of sociology applicable in policing and administration.

Demography- The statistical study of populations is called Demography. This branch of sociology can be applied in any sort of dynamic population changing over time.

Economic Sociology- In this branch of sociology we study economic development of all world populations.

Evolutionary Sociology- Also known as Sociocultural Evolution throws light on cultural and social developments in different societies.

Film Sociology – Entertainment makes integral part of society. In this branch of sociology we study the evolution of films from the ancient past when films were made dumb to present day when home theater is not a luxury matter but essential goods.

Human Sociology – Also known as Evolutionary Psychology in short EP; in this branch of sociology we study functional products of natural selection e.g. memory, perception and languages practiced in different human societies and their evolutions.

Industrial Sociology – Also known as sociology of work, in this branch we study the impact of industrial growth on human societies, also in this branch we study human interaction within work place.

Internet Sociology- With the advent of World Wide Web the distance between human societies is lessening. In this branch we study how the Internet has modified the human living and role of human societies in Internet growth.

Urban Sociology – In this branch of Sociology we study the impact of human societies in urbanization vis-à-vis how human societies have changed or changing in the urban areas.

Besides above branches there are many more branches of sociology like sociology of mathematics, sociology of medicine, sociology of space etc. To sum up where human interaction is involved there is involved sociology and all these segments of sociology are studied separately.  Thus by now we can say sociology is the study of impact of human behavior under varied circumstances in which human interaction involved.

Sociologists are integral parts of society. Following are given some quotes from some of the well-recognized sociologists.

“Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year. It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of tomorrow. Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tomorrow comes the harvest and the playtime.”

 W. E. B. Du Bois quotes (American Scholar, Sociologist and Civil-Rights Leader,1868-1963)

“We were making the future, he said, and hardly any of us troubled to think what future we were making. And here it is!”

 H. G. Wells quotes (English Novelist, Journalist, Sociologist and Historian. Best known for his science fiction books. 1866-1946)

“Some people bear three kinds of trouble - the ones they've had, the ones they have, and the ones they expect to have.”

 H. G. Wells quotes (English Novelist, Journalist, Sociologist and Historian. Best known for his science fiction books. 1866-1946)

“Charles V said that a man who knew four languages was worth four men; and Alexander the Great so valued learning, that he used to say he was more indebted to Aristotle for giving him knowledge that, than his father Philip for giving him life.”

Thomas Babington Macaulay quotes (English Historian, 1800-1859)

“Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence”

 Aristotle
