National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NIT-K)

Admission to M.Tech (Sponsored seats/Research), Ph.D. and M.Sc Programme 2010-2011

Eligibility Criteria

M.Tech (Sponsored seats/Research) Programme:

A pass in the prescribed qualifying examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.0 OR not less than 60% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/ university examination conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme) For SC/ST minimum CGPA of 5.5 OR 55% marks in the aggregate. Valid GATE score is essential for scholarship seats. The number of seats are flexible subjected to the availability of funding for research.

M. Sc in Chemistry: A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with 60% (or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of atleast 6.0 in the 0-10 scale grading system) of the aggregate in all the years of course of study and with 55% (CGPA of atleast 5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system) in respect of SC/ST candidates.

M. Sc. in Physics: A Bachelor’s Degree in the subject with 60% (or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.0 in the 0-10 scale grading system) of the aggregate in all the years of course of study and with 55% (CGPA of at least 5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system) in respect of SC/ST candidates.

For Ph.D. Programme:

i) Admission to a Ph.D. Programme shall be open to candidates who have passed the prescribed qualifying examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 5.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system, or not less than 55% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/university examinations conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme). However, this prescribed minimum shall be a CGPA of 5.0 or 50% marks in the aggregate for SC/ST candidates. The prescribed qualifying examination is as follows:

a. For Ph.D. in Engineering/Technology – Master’s degree in relevant field.
b. For Ph.D. in Science /Humanities, Social Sciences & Management – Master’s degree in relevant field.

ii) Employed professionals having experience and proven competence aspiring for Ph.D. Programme will be considered under part-time scheme (External Registration) and will be allowed to pursue their research at their own location of work.

There are five types of student status for Ph.D. programme:
1) Full-time students on Institute Scholarship
2) Full-time sponsored students on QIP/EFIP (AICTE)
3) Full-time/External Registrants sponsored from Industry or other organizations including Educational Institutions
4) Full-time/ External Registrants non sponsored non-scholarship students
5) Internal Registrants sponsored staff of NITK

The prescribed application form and Information Bulletin for M.Tech./MTech (Research)/MSc and PhD can be downloaded from the Institute website www.nitk.ac.in .

The application form can be duly filled and sent to the Dy. The Indian Navy

Applications are invited from unmarried Male Indian citizens for Permanent Commission Officers in the Law Cadre of Executive Branch of the Indian Navy for Course commencing Jan 2011 at Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimaia, Kerala.

Eligibility Criteria

Age: 22 to 27 years (candidate must have been born between 02 Jan 1984 to 01 Jan 1989 both dates inclusive).

Educational Qualification:

A Degree in Law qualifying for enrolment as an advocate under Advocates Act 1961, with minimum 55% marks.

Note: Candidates who have not completed their Law Degree (i.e. appearing candidates) need not apply, their applications will not be, accepted.

Physical Standard

Height & weight: (a) Minimum height Male-157 cms with correlated weight

Selection Procedure

The candidates will be issued call up for Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews based on their performance in Law Degree. If a candidate possesses higher qualification with better percentage, his higher qualification will be considered for cutoff. Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy) [IHQ-MoD(Navy)] reserves the right to shortlist applications and to fix cut off percentage. No communication will be entertained on this account.

SSB interviews for short listed candidates will be scheduled during Aug to Nov 2010 at Bangalore/Bhopal or Coimbatore.

The total duration of SSB interviews is of 5 days, consisting of Stage 1 (Day One) and Stage 2 (Four days). Stage 1 Tests consist of Officers intelligence Rating Tests (OIRT) and Picture Perception and Discussion Tests (PDPT). Candidates who fail to qualify in Stage 1 will be routed back on the same day from SSB centre.

Stage 2 Tests consist of Psychological Tests, Group Task Tests, Group Discussion and interview. Successful candidates will thereafter undergo Special Medical Examination at the same venue (approx duration 5 days at nearest military hospital).

Candidates recommended by the SSBs and declared medically fit, will be appointed for training in order of All India Merit depending on the number of vacancies. The confirmation in the service is subject to satisfactory Police Verification Report and Character & Antecedent Certificate.

Change of SSB centre for interview is not permissible under any circumstances.

Any correspondence regarding change of SSB dates be addressed to the President of the SSB on receipt of call up letter.

No compensation will be paid in respect of any injury sustained as a result of tests.

Return 2nd Class Sleeper rail fare is admissible for the SSB interview, if appearing for the first time for the entry.

For Ph.D:

Essential Requirements for Full-time Scholars

One of the following requirements is essential to be fulfilled by a candidate. Additionally he must possess the qualifications in the relevant field.

Candidates holding Masters Degree in Engineering / Technology/ Sciences/ Management/Humanities & Social Sciences or equivalent with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.75 on a 10 point scale or equivalent as determined by the Institutes or having minimum 60% marks in aggregate, where marks are awarded. For candidates belonging to SC/ST or physically handicapped category, the minimum requirement of percentage of marks in aggregate is 55% and CGPA is 6.25 on a 10-point scale. The reserve category candidates must submit the required certificate from the competent authority as given in Annexure-1 along with the duly completed application form.

In exceptional cases, candidates with B. Tech. degree or equivalent in respective discipline with excellent academic record with minimum CGPA of 6.75 on a 10-point scale or 60% marks may be considered eligible for admission. Preference would be given to candidate possessing GATE score.

If an applicant has been awarded research fellowship by any National/ International funding agency such as UGC/CSIR etc. can be considered for admission.

An employee sponsored by his / her employer may be considered for admission as a sponsored full time Scholar provided he / she has a minimum of 2 years experience as on 30th June 2010 and is treated by the employer as on duty with normal salary and allowances and is relieved for the period of study. He/She should produce sponsorship certificate as per proforma given in Annexure-4 from the parent organization along with the application for admission to the programme failing which he/she will not be permitted to appear for the admission interview.

Part Time Scholars

(a) A candidate can be considered for part time admission if he/she has 2 years experience as on 30th June 2010 and fulfils the eligibility conditions defined in 2.1 A (a) or (b). He/She should produce No-objection certificate as per proforma given in Annexure-5 from the parent organization along with the application for admission to the programme failing which he/she will not be permitted to appear for the admission interview.

(b) Permanent employees of the Institute or employees of sponsored projects, with one-year experience can be considered for part time registration provided he/she has been given administrative clearance by the Director of the Institute. Temporary/ contract academic staff of the Institute as well as staff of schemes may be given administrative clearance to such admission on part time basis at any time after joining service subject to recommendation of Dept. for Institute employees and Principal Investigator in case of scheme employees.

For MBA:

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy/ Agriculture Engg. or M.Sc. in Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics or Statistics.

For M.Sc. Programmes:

Mathematics: B.Sc. with Mathematics as main subject

Physics: B.Sc. or B.Sc. Honours in Physics & Mathematics at graduate level.

Chemistry: B.Sc. or B.Sc. Honours in Chemistry.

Candidates of general category/OBC seeking admission to the postgraduate programmes must have at least 60% marks or CGPA of 6.75 on a 10-point scale at the qualifying degree level; SC/ST category candidates, must have 55% marks or 6.25 CGPA on a 10-point scale. The percentage of marks will be considered as aggregate awarded for the qualifying degree.

The SC/ST category candidates must submit the requisite certificate from a competent authority, as per format in Annexure-1 along with application form.
