An Introduction To Medical Council of India (MCI)

The Medical Council of India established in 1933 is administering authority for standardization of medical education in India. The council monitor medical practices, provide accreditation to medical colleges, register medical practitioners, grants recognition of medical degrees. The council comes under the purview of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The council keeps records of all registered medical practitioners in the country.


All doctors have to obey to the Oath they take during award of degree certificates and maintain best and very level of medical practices. In case a doctor is not obeying the rules of medical practices in India, his / her medical certification could be canceled by the council and he / she will be barred from providing further medical assistance.

The council’s head office is based in National Capital New Delhi. Generally registration of medical practitioners is done by state medical councils. However, candidates who has a medical degree and certificate can also apply for online registration through MCI Online

The Medical Council of India serves to the following purposes:


  • To maintain very level of medical education at Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) level in the country
  • To recommend for recognition or de-recognition of medical qualifications and medical schools of India or overseas in India
  • To provide permanent and provisional registration to medical doctors who posses a degree and certificate
  • To enter with MoUs with foreign countries for mutual recognition of medical qualifications


There are 412 colleges in India teaching MBBS program. In the category of PG courses following DM. MCh, Ph.D., MD, MS, MSc, MHA, FCPS and Various diplomas are offered. The these courses and institutes providing instruction in all such medical programs are approved and affiliated with Medical Council of India.

Also the council has instituted following awards 

  • Dr. BC Roy Award
  • Hari On Ashram Award
  • Silver Jubilee Award

 For smooth administration of medical practices in the country the Medical Council of India is supported by State Medical Councils
