Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

GATE - Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering jointly administered by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for admission into Post Graduate Programmes offered by these institutes in Engineering, Technology, Applied Sciences. GATE Score is also eligibility criteria for award of Scholarships / Fellowships offered by Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) of Government of India. Besides, many Public Sector Units (PSUs) also requires GATE score for short listing of candidates for recruitment.

Other than IITs and IISc Bangalore, GATE Score is also criteria for PG Admission into Engineering and Sciences discipline of Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and many other Universities across India.

Please take in note IITs and IISc have no role in PG Admission process of other institutes or for selection of candidates in PSUs.

On the basis of GATE Score and choice of study discipline MHRD decides whether a candidate is eligible for Scholarship / Fellowship or not. Appearing in GATE does not guarantee for MHRD Assistantship but surely it opens a gate for further studies. The percentile score of candidate is deciding factor for all purposes served through GATE.

Every, either one of the IIT or IISc itself takes the responsibility for administration of GATE. Test Centres are set across all major cities. The examination is generally conducted in February every year. Candidates who are in final year of third or fourth of engineering degree program or previous or final year of master’s degree program can apply for appearing in GATE. Students who hold professional qualifications like AMIE or AMIETE or into final year of any such program can also apply for appearing in GATE.
