In India Class XII Board Examinations i.e. K-12 qualification is crucial to make career choices. Marks of a candidate makes deciding factor for further admission into Under Graduate College Level Course of 3 / 4 / 5 Years duration. 3 Year UG College Programs are generally called Pass Courses / General Courses while 4 years or more required for technical education.
Many Universities accepts Class 12th Board Certificate as standard for accepting applications for College Admission. Admissions are made on the basis of Merit. However, applying to a college does not guarantee admission; candidates have to achieve minimum Cut-Off Marks to be called for selection programs and courses. Many colleges also conducts screening test for selection. Admission to a college course largely depends on 3 factors: 1. Marks in Class 12th Board Examination, 2. Performance in Screening Tests (if offered), 3. Competencies in other areas like Sports etc though not mandatory but sports boys and girls given special privilege.
Beyond CBSE India also have many State Boards and National Board like NIOS etc. One can obtain Class 12th Qualification from any Board to apply for UG College Admission. Special reservation also given to students of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Physically Handicapped (PH) candidates and sons / daughters of army personals etc.
CBSE is largest board and primarily teaches students of Central Government Employees. However, students from all economic strata study in CBSE affiliated schools.
